The Count of Cape Hatteras: Washed Ashore
Book I of The Count of Cape Hatteras series by Bruce Wilkins
Think piracy is a thing of centuries past on the Outer Banks of North Carolina? Think again.
Stretching from the wild horses of Carova Beach to the shipwrecks of the Graveyard of the Atlantic, The Count of Cape Hatteras by Bruce Wilkins is a blistering novel of modern day pirates who live, love and battle on the Outer Banks.
Instead of brandishing muskets and cutlasses, the weapons of choice for this new breed are briefcases, cyberspace and the occasional automatic assault rifle.
The Count of Cape Hatteras begins in 1991 with a betrayal between two friends just as they were headed into adulthood. Naive and innocent Brent Williams is set up on a Caribbean scuba diving trip by a close friend. At stake was the attention of Brent’s longtime girlfriend. Orignally jailed to await his killing by corrupt officials of a small island nation, a chance occurrence gives Brent a commutation to life in prison.
Fifteen years later, he manages to escape with the help of a fellow inmate and a massive hurricane. He returns to the Outer Banks armed with an untold fortune, a new identity, and anger seasoned with hate.
But he quickly learns modern life is startlingly different. Much of the world and its people have changed. Morals have dropped, intelligence diulted, and cheapness has become glorfied.
Yet, Brent Williams doesn’t give up. He surrounds himself with a virtual private army headquartered in a hotel he rescues from near extinction. He tediously studies modern life from the new standards of business to the technical aspects of warfare to how love can shift and change as if one of the region’s timeless sand dunes.
In The Count of Cape Hatteras we are taken along a rapid and revealing tale that goes far, far beyond the glossy tourist brochures of the Outer Banks. We see the hidden world that follows in a long historical line of pirates, U-boat crews, and marijuana smugglers.
We see the transition of the young and poor Brent Williams to the hardened and powerful Count of Cape Hatteras. We see a man driven to have the simple joys of life and home returned. We see a battle that must take place, a revenge that is destined to occur, and a love that surpasses all manner of danger and destruction.
We see more than just the Count of Cape Hatteras. We see the unbridled timelessness of one of the most colorful regions in the world. The Outer Banks of North Carolina.
